Will Automakers & Vehicle Prices Have Problems With Southern Border?

The facts are that those in Bedford, Berea, and Tremont can sell a car for cash very quickly. Those actively seeking to locate a place to sell my car for cash—should give us a call in Avon, Reminderville, or Geauga County. The reality lately has been a pattern of the value of a scrap car remaining low in Macedonia, Aurora, and Westlake. Yes, we buy any car in Shaker Heights, North Randall, and Solon, and then tow it away.

An Automotive News story posted on Jan 31, 2017, by Ginger Gibson and David Shepardson tells us the following: “Days before a group of GOP representatives were due to discuss their party’s debated proposal to tax imports, Toyota Corp. sent a message to its U.S. dealerships — tell them the tax would negatively impact car buyers. Many of Toyota’s 1,500 dealers contacted House Members. Placing a 20 % tax on imported items forces consumers to pay possibly thousands more for cars, they warned.

The fear is that a large tax on imports would hurt future sales & profits and put them at a disadvantage to competitors more reliant on U.S.-made products. Toyota dealers currently employ over 97,000 people in the U.S. Organizations frequently lobby Congress, an effort is taking place somewhat outside of the public eye partly to avoid possible riffs with President Donald Trump, who has targeted companies for manufacturing off-shore for U.S. consumers.  Earlier in January, Trump targeted Toyota, threatening to add a fee on the world’s largest auto manufacturer if it builds its vehicles for the U.S. market in a Mexican plant. The White House said last week that a border tax is one option, although what the plans are is not clear. The plan proposed by House GOP would cut corporate income taxes to 20% from 35%, exclude export revenue from taxable income and add the 20% tax on imported goods.

Companies who depend on imports think a border tax will outweigh the benefits of lower corporate taxes. Auto dealers are reaching out to members of Congress within their districts, Toyota and several others are lobbying in states where they have significant manufacturing plants and currently employ workers. Target Corp’s CEO Brian Cornell, went to Washington to meet members of the House Ways & Means Committee explaining that an import tax could limit consumer capability to buy needed goods.” The full story is available here.
